However, if you paint it since it has texture, it will not be smooth like the one in the pic, but it would be just like painting wood, so it's fine. However, i like what you've done with it so far and don't think you have to paint it. Also, it's not in disrepair as the finish seems fine, so a bit of poly or glaze might just be enough to add some pizazz. That was a mouthful, sorry.
